Kočevje Outdoor Festival

The Kočevje Trail Run takes participants through one of Slovenia’s most famous forests, known for its wildlife — including bears. While many runners wonder “What about the bears?”, locals reassure that the animals avoid the noise of the event. With beautiful trails, great forest scenery, and a safe, welcoming atmosphere, it’s a unique way to explore this legendary Slovenian forest.

When you read of all the bears that have attacked,
you spend more time planning how you’ll react.
The bear sees runners like sushi on a plate,
then charges forth, limbs flying as he’s in fury state.

No climbing trees, no shouting, no flight,
you may just stand and cross yourself right.
But it’s not as bad as the stories might say,
maybe because runners are very far away.

Kočevje woods hold beasts both large and keen,
you rarely meet evil where the silence is seen.
A first time, but not the last, at the KOF event,
next year again, I’ll be on photo assignment.
